In today’s political landscape, corporate influence on right-wing candidates has sparked intense discussions. Large sums of money flow from businesses into the coffers of these political figures. But why do they do it? At first glance, it may seem like a display of civic engagement or goodwill. Yet, a closer look reveals a more complex motive. For many corporations, donations are a calculated effort to advance their own interests. These include pushing for reduced regulations, securing tax breaks, and exploiting loopholes that allow them greater freedom from oversight.

The Pursuit of Deregulation

Right-wing candidates often advocate for less government intervention in business. Many corporations see this as an opportunity to boost their profits. For example, when environmental regulations are relaxed, companies can operate without the same constraints, which can save them money but harm the environment and consumer safety.

A clear illustration is the oil and gas industry, which has benefitted from relaxed environmental regulations. In 2020 alone, the U.S. produced 11 million barrels of oil per day, significantly impacting the environment and public health by increasing pollution levels.

Deregulation can lead to negative consequences for the ecosystem. For instance, when corporations avoid regulations meant to control pollution, they may harm air and water quality. Research shows that areas with fewer regulations often experience higher rates of respiratory issues among residents, costly health outcomes that society must address. No one wants to live near factory polluting the air and water with dangerous runoff, but we have to remember that environmental impact doesn't happen in a bubble--we are all effected by contaminated air and water!

Tax Breaks and Exploiting Loopholes

Another significant reason corporations donate to right-wing candidates is the promise of tax breaks. Politicians focused on tax cuts often develop plans that heavily benefit large corporations. In 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowered the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, further incentivizing donations. Businesses contributing to these candidates anticipate a favorable return on their investment through reduced tax obligations while the middle and lower classes of the country make up the difference!

Many companies use loopholes to lessen their tax burdens, often employing high-priced lobbyists to craft favorable legislation. This represents an issue where average citizens effectively shoulder the burden of funding public services. In fact, a 2021 report from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found that 55 large companies paid $0 in federal income taxes, shifting the financial load to individual taxpayers.

The Erosion of Consumer Protections

As corporations gain more influence, consumer voices often become weaker. Policies pushed by right-wing candidates can favor corporate interests over consumer protections. This shift leaves consumers vulnerable to a range of issues, from surprise charges to lower product standards. In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission received over 3.2 million consumer complaints, many linked to deceptive business practices stemming from reduced regulations.

Moreover, heightened profit motives can lead to misleading tactics. Companies might exaggerate claims about their products, such as stating a product is environmentally friendly when it actually is not. With decreased oversight, many companies are guaranteed to prioritize profit over transparency, negatively impacting consumer trust and satisfaction. Luckily for us, they showed their hand in the 2024 election. With such a stark choice of candidates--those that prioritize profits for the CEO's with zero regard for the common good majorly supported DT and the extremists in congress, chasing their promises of de-regulation and tax breaks for the rich. The silver lining? That makes it easy for us to know who has no interest in protecting the public, employees, consumers, or the planet... and they don't deserve a single penny more from the public they're seeking to take advantage of.

The Role of Consumers

Given these troubling realities, consumers have an important role to play. It's crucial for shoppers to understand where they spend their money. When individuals choose to support companies contributing to right-wing candidates, they, knowingly or unknowingly, endorse those agendas.

Consumers hold substantial power. By consciously selecting ethical businesses that emphasize sustainability and consumer rights, individuals can drive corporate change. According to a 2021 Nielsen survey, 66% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable brands. This indicates that a demanding consumer base can effectively counter the influences of political donations in shaping policies.

Furthermore, thanks to the wealth of information available today, consumers can stay informed about the brands they support. Many companies publish transparency reports detailing their political contributions. Engaging with or seeking out this information can help consumers make better choices. A Call to Action

The ties between corporate donations to right-wing candidates and consumer impacts are increasingly clear. Corporations often seek to enhance their profits at the expense of deregulation, tax reductions, and weakened consumer protections—all posing risks to society and the environment. In this landscape, the average consumer plays a pivotal role.

By staying informed about the practices and values of the companies they support, individuals can help foster a more ethical marketplace. As shoppers, it is essential to look beyond the surface of products and brands. Our choices can create a positive ripple effect.

By advocating for businesses that commit to ethical practices and meaningful societal goals, we can take critical steps towards cultivating a more responsible and sustainable economy. Each dollar spent is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.
