The Corporate Backslide Against Diversity: Why You Should Withdraw your Support for Target

In recent weeks, we have seen a troubling shift in the corporate world. Target now joins the list of major companies that are minimizing or completely rolling back their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This trend signals an alarming pivot towards catering to right-leaning interests that value profits over social responsibility. Such decisions could have severe consequences for marginalized communities that rely on strong corporate support for equality and representation.

"As a retailer that serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of staying in step with the evolving external landscape, now and in the future," Kiera Fernandez, executive vice president and chief community impact and equity officer, said in a note to Target staff.

Is this like a "everybody's doing it" argument?

Is she saying equality of opportunity and inclusion is no longer important at Target because it seems out of step with the public? Do they really believe the majority of consumers don't care about equity? If equity in the workplace was so standard, why did anyone ever feel the need to begin DEI initiatives in the first place?

Target may be the latest "lemming" to follow this misguided trend into a racist and sexist oblivion, but I believe the American consumer has the power to show them the way back into our hearts and our wallets. Until then... Target needs to know where we stand, and we need to immediately withdraw our support and tell them why.

The Impact of Target's Decision on Marginalized Communities

Target's recent announcement to reduce support for DEI programs is not just a corporate strategy. It represents a setback for those fighting for equality. According to a 2021 report by McKinsey, companies in the top quartile for gender and racial diversity are 25% more likely to have above-average profitability. When companies like Target withdraw their support for DEI, they risk falling short of their potential and perpetuating inequality within their workforce and beyond.

For instance, consider the educational programs aimed at young people in underrepresented communities. In 2020, Target allocated over $20 million to support organizations that promote youth education and diversity. Reducing this financial support can directly limit opportunities for those who need it most.

Why Corporations Should Prioritize DEI

Investing in DEI is not just the right thing to do; it's also smart business. A report from Deloitte indicates that inclusive companies are 1.7 times more likely to be innovation leaders in their market. Companies that prioritize DEI foster unique ideas and perspectives, resulting in better products and services.

For example, Mastercard’s commitment to gender diversity has significantly impacted their bottom line. The company reported a 30% increase in acquisition growth in markets where they promoted gender parity in leadership roles. This statistic illustrates the tangible benefits that come from a diverse workforce.

The Responsibility of Consumers

As consumers, we hold power in our purchasing decisions. If companies like Target choose to step back from social responsibility, we can choose to withdraw our support. This means being intentional about where we spend our money. Supporting brands with robust DEI programs not only aligns with our values but also encourages others to follow suit.

When companies understand that their customers care about DEI, they are more likely to maintain and enhance their initiatives. If there is no consequence for these decisions--for the regression of progress towards equality and opportunity for all--than we should expect more and more backsliding.

Looking Ahead: A Call to Action

While Target’s recent decisions may be disheartening, they present an opportunity for us to advocate for change. We can hold corporations accountable, urging them to prioritize social responsibility. Share your thoughts with the brands you care about through social media or direct communication. Encourage them to support DEI initiatives and invest in their communities.

It is crucial to remember that every voice matters. By coming together and demanding change, we can push corporations to recommit to their DEI efforts, ensuring that equality and representation remain at the forefront of their agendas.

In Summary: Why the Shift Matters

The rollback of DEI programs by corporations like Target can have long-lasting consequences for marginalized communities. By supporting brands that prioritize diversity and inclusion, we can drive positive change in the corporate landscape. Companies must recognize that standing up for social responsibility is not just a moral obligation but a business imperative. It is up to us as consumers to voice our c

oncerns and support companies that align with our values. They have NO incentive to change unless we withdraw our financial support.
